About the CheeseSteak
Originated in the 1920's by Italian immigrants living in South Philadelphia. Often called "Steak Hoagies", the CheeseSteak was prepared with thinly sliced steak, sautéed with grilled onions, topped with Provolone cheese, and served on an Italian roll.
A Wrong Turn
On the way to NYC during a family vacation, Charley took a wrong turn and landed in South Philly where he enjoyed his first CheeseSteak. Totally hooked, he took his findings back home to Columbus, Ohio and began testing recipes on his college buddies.
A Loan from Mom
After perfecting his recipe, Charley borrowed from his Mom's life savings and opened his first restaurant in 1986 across the street from The Ohio State University campus. The tiny, 16-seat eatery featuring fresh grilled subs, fries and lemonade was an instant hit.
From College Student to Entrepreneur
Although Charley was only 22 and a junior at The Ohio State University when he opened his first restaurant, he knew that he was on to something big. His goal was to establish a business where he could share his success with others. Once Charley opened his second location, friends began to approach him about partnership opportunities.
Franchising Takes Off
In 1991, Charley began to franchise his business. Locations popped up all over the country, including mall food courts, airports, and Army & Air Force bases. From Atlanta to Chicago to Hawaii to Japan, you can now enjoy the Award-Winning taste of Charley's Grilled Subs®.
Charley's Mission
With 300 locations and growing, Charley's Vision is the same as it always has been — "To honor God and strengthen our neighbors." In the spirit of brotherly love, we hope to nourish your hearts with the simple pleasure of a great CheeseSteak.
